Cataracts are a rather frequent cause of night driving problems. In fact, patients may not be aware that the degree of night vision problems can be particularly disturbing even with a pretty mild cataract. Night driving tends to be difficult enough because the overall low light levels can cause you to misjudge distances and boundaries like the edge of the road or distance to a street or exit. Further, even mild cataracts can cause night glare off car headlights and tail lights and be quite annoying. So, what we need patients to be aware of is that if they have been told that they have even the beginning of cataracts and are becoming fearful of night driving they need to bring this to our attention so that together we can discuss and consider whether it might be time to consider whether cataract surgery might be a good option to help you regain your night driving comfort level.
