Bernard Milstein, M.D., a Houston LASIK Surgeon at The Eye Clinic of Texas shared information on what factors contribute to the accuracy of All Laser LASIK even more.

Dr. Milstein explained, “We have learned that the accuracy of the refractive procedure is dependent on the initial examination, the laser used for the treatment, and the quality of the team working in the laser center. For that reason, at The Eye Clinic, our surgeons always examine their own patients before they prepare a treatment plan. Once the plan has been formulated, the treatment is carried out using Wavelight Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Excimer Laser along with the Zeiss VisuMax® Femtosecond Laser. These are considered among the fastest, safest, most effective and reliable lasers for corneal laser eye surgery available today.

The laser center team is composed of individuals who have all been involved in LASIK treatments for a minimum of 3 years, and some for over 20. Our team is very well experienced, having been a part of thousands of refractive laser or LASIK procedures.

The combination of experienced surgeons, experienced personnel, and state of the art lasers allow us to offer patients a safe, predictable, and enjoyable refractive experience.”

Houston LASIK Surgeon Bernard Milstein, M.D. offered some thoughts and comments on LASIK and how the Zeiss VisuMax® Laser is expected to make All Laser LASIK even more comfortable for patients.

Dr. Milstein explained, “I have spent a considerable amount of time in the past 20 years treating about 10,000 refractive patients and learning what is important to them. Because I see and examine every patient myself, both before and after surgery, I believe I am well attuned to what patients are interested in when they have refractive surgery.

There are three major concerns for most people, they are: pain and discomfort, accuracy of treatment and cost. These are all reasonable concerns and we have spent the past 20 years trying to satisfy those concerns.

When excimer laser refractive surgery was first introduced, the procedure was called Photorefractive Keratectomy or PRK. It was very predictable in the result it produced, but it also very predictably caused significant discomfort. In an effort to reduce the discomfort, a corneal flap was created using an instrument called a microkeratome. This is the current procedure we refer to as LASIK. But whether a LASIK flap is created by a microkeratome, or an IntraLase laser, there can be some discomfort and pressure produced at the time of the procedure.

We now have a new laser that can very gently create a corneal flap, the Zeiss VisuMax® Laser. Because of its unique design, engineering and Zeiss optics, it promises to provide a more comfortable and virtually painless procedure.

There are approximately 300 Zeiss VisuMax® Laser being used throughout the world, but Zeiss has only recently decided to enter the American market. At The Eye Clinic of Texas, our Zeiss VisuMax® Laser is the 12th one installed in the U.S. We are very pleased to be among the first to offer this innovation with improved technology. We are quite excited and believe that this helps to address one of the significant obstacles for people who want to have refractive surgery – fear of pain and discomfort.”

Bernard Milstein, M.D., a LASIK Surgeon serving greater Houston & Galveston at The Eye Clinic of Texas commented, “The clinical experience as well as the recommendation of the FDA is that contact lenses not be exposed to any form of water in order to avoid eye health risk-especially the risk of Acanthamoeba Keratitis. For this reason, anyone who swims or participates in water sports or activities needs to think about LASIK in Houston as the best type of vision correction today,” explained Dr. Milstein.

Wearing contact lenses for swimming and water sports and activities poses a risk of Acanthamoeba Keratitis, a potentially catastrophic eye infection of the cornea. Acanthamoeba Keratitis is caused by an organism present in all forms of impure water such as swimming pools, tap water, saunas, wells and even showers.

“Contact Lenses are really quite safe to wear if your follow proper care guidelines and instructions. However, if water restrictions such as swimming, bath tubs and showering are part of your daily routine, you do need to keep your lenses out. Many more Houston patients-even very successful contact lens wearers-find this to be a hassle and are seeking us out to discuss LASIK Surgery as an option,” said Dr. Milstein.

“From time to time we get the opportunity to provide a LASIK consultation for a Houston patient who asks if they might just be too old for LASIK surgery,” shared Galveston & Houston LASIK Surgeon Bernard Milstein, M.D. “I recently examined a 72 year old gentleman who wanted to know if he was too old for LASIK,” shared Dr. NAME. “In reviewing his general health he was in good shape-and after his eye exam I was comfortable that his eye health, corneal health and tear film were quite good. His retinas were normal and he had a bare trace of a cataract in one eye that had been there and stable for 3 or 4 years but it corrected to 20/20 with his -7.00 D eyeglass correction. Most importantly he couldn’t tolerate contact lenses and was a fairly active tennis player and hiker-so we scheduled him for LASIK,” explained Dr. Milstein. “We did however explain that he was going to need to either wear reading glasses or consider having monovision to help with his near vision presbyopia focusing problem that we all have after 40 or so.”

As long as they have a tangible reason for wanting LASIK so that it will improve their lifestyle, people thinking about having Laser Eye Surgery can do so without worrying about being too old for LASIK as long as they have healthy eyes, a health cornea, sufficient tears and are free of cataracts or retinal diseases. If you are someone you know would like to find out if you are a good candidate for LASIK please callThe Eye Clinic of Texas at 800-423-3937, visit The Eye Clinic of Texas or facebook.com/ecot.lasik to schedule an appointment.

Galveston & Houston LASIK Surgeon Dr. Da-Thuy Van commented about the increasing number of motorcycle riders interested in LASIK. “Contact lenses and certainly eyeglasses can be a real challenge for motorcycle riders-so many more motorcycle enthusiasts consider LASIK these days. We want our motorcycle lovers having LASIK in Houston to enjoy motorcycle riding, but we always try to remind them that eye safety and also dry eyes should top the list of things they think about as part of their readiness checklists along with the condition of their gear and bikes,” Dr. Van further explained.

It is important to recognize the need for eye protection from the sun, bugs, small rocks and pebbles and especially the wind, which can really contribute to dry eye symptoms. LASIK patients as well as other recreational motorcycle riders sometimes overlook or are just not aware of the potential for eye irritation and motorcycle dry eye caused by the wind, exhaust fumes, pollen and pollution-as well as the summer sun and heat.

At your LASIK consultation the staff will be exploring your lifestyle needs and activities. As a potential LASIK patient we want to take the time necessary so that we can carefully counsel you in order to get the best results and help meet your expectations. Please take the time to tell us about your motorcycle riding interest as well as all of the ways in which you are hoping to benefit from LASIK.
