Diabetic Eye Exam

About Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic eye problems include an increased risk of cataracts, glaucoma, neurological eye muscle problems and the potential for serious vision loss from diabetic retinopathy a retinal vascular disease. Vision loss from diabetic eye disease is manageable and in many instances preventable but requires early diagnosis and treatment to be effective. This means ALL patients with diabetes must be diligent in having eye exams at intervals recommended by their eye doctors and/or their primary care physicians, internists or endocrinologists.

About Diabetes

According to theU.S. National Center for Health Statistics21.7 million U.S. adults aged 18 and over (9.2%) have been diagnosed with diabetes and this percentage increases with age. One in five adults aged 65 and over (20.5%, or 8.7 million) has diagnosed diabetes, compared with 11.0% (11.3 million) aged 40–64 and 1.9% (1.7 million) aged 18–39.

About Delay in Seeking Diabetic Eye Exams

There seems to be a trend in that the more recently you are in having your diabetes diagnosed, the longer you delay in seeking and annual diabetic eye exam. This is troubling in preventing vision loss and avoiding diabetic eye problems. Among all adults, the percentage who visited an eye doctor in the past 12 months increased with years since diabetes diagnosis. About half, 50% of those diagnosed with diabetes within the prior 5 years had visited an eye doctor in the past 12 months, compared with 57.3% of those diagnosed 5-10 years ago and 61.2% of those diagnosed 10 or more years ago. Among adults with diagnosed diabetes, the percentage who had visited an eye doctor during the past 12 months increased with age: 38.2% for those aged 18–39, 53.8% for those aged 40–64, and 66.5% for those aged 65 and over. Thus, among adults with diabetes, both age and years since diagnosis may play a role in visiting an eye doctor in the past 12 months.

Sharon C shared her LASIK experience at The Eye Clinic of Texas…

“I had Lasik monovision surgery and have been so completely satisfied with my vision! I was so sick of wearing reading glasses.  I always lost them and hated wearing them to put on my makeup.  Since the surgery, I have not had to wear reading glasses at all!  My vision is 20/20 after surgery and prior to surgery I couldn’t see the big “E”.  I would highly recommend Lasik monovision to anyone considering it!  My doctor did an excellent job and I am so grateful for my fantastic vision!”

“I remember wearing those ugly black glasses in school when they weren’t in style.  They were hideous. I wore glasses and contacts since grade school. I had terrible vision. I had LASIK surgery and it absolutely changed my world, that is, my world of vision!  I can see glasses and contacts free now.  Words cannot express or describe how thankful I am to The Eye Clinic of Texas for changing my life.”

“I wore glasses since 3rd grade.  I tried contacts when I was older but my eyes were to dry.  I worked in the operating room with Dr .Milstein and knew he did Lasik.  I went to his office for the evaluation for Lasik and he determined I was a great candidate.  I was so happy with him and his office staff, they were so informative.  I had the procedure and I am seeing wonderfully!”

Our own Bernard Milstein, M.D. of The Eye Clinic of Texas just returned from the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery, a yearly meeting for ophthalmologists and representatives of the major ophthalmic corporations involved with cataract and laser eye surgery for vision correction. The meeting, which is by invitation, was attended by 125 ophthalmologists and an equal number of industry representatives. The Chief Executive Officers of Alcon, AMO, Bausch & Lomb, Allergan, and Zeiss, the major ophthalmic companies, attended and made presentations. This is a unique meeting where practicing ophthalmology opinion leaders have an opportunity to meet and interact with the key industry leaders in a free exchange of ideas, with the hope of fostering innovation in eye care.

The American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery started approximately 30 years ago when David Dulaney, M.D., an ophthalmologist from Phoenix, invited a number of his friends who were on the forefront of laser vision correction such as bladeless lasik and cataract surgery to meet and discuss the challenges and opportunities they were encountering. The meeting has grown, but it has retained much of its pioneering quality.

Dr. Milstein shared his thoughts about this interesting meeting. “I have attended this meeting for approximately 10 years and have been invigorated by the constant exposure to new ideas and new concepts. This year was no exception. The discussion was centered on new intraocular lens implants and the exciting changes that were occurring in the laser vision correction arena,” explained Dr. Milstein. “It was comforting to be included by the CEO of Zeiss as one of the 18 major centers that was involved with Zeiss in the development of the SMILE procedure and their VisuMax Laser in the United States. I was quite pleased to be included in the group of 18 physicians who are considered to be the team leaders for refractive surgery,” shared Dr. Milstein.

“My wife told me for years to go have the procedure but I never did. I always made excuses and let time get in the way. Finally, I had LASIK last year and it is the best money I have ever spent on myself. I can see so clear when I ride my bike and go deer hunting. My vision is better than what it was when I wore my contacts, something I couldn’t fathom! It is such a refreshing feeling to get up in the morning and not have to put contacts in or grab my glasses.”

LASIK Surgeons Know About Safety

This past October 21, 2015 marked the 20 year anniversary of FDA approval of the use of the excimer laser for Laser Vision Correction of common eye problems such as nearsightedness or myopia. 20 years is a long time and we have now arrived with technology, techniques, skills and experience to be able to provide patients wanting to eliminate their dependence on glasses and contacts, with a safe, effective and reproducible laser eye surgery treatment-whether LASIK, PRK or other method of correction.

Patient Barriers to LASIK

Still, one of the main barriers to patients who want to have LASIK is there concern about safety. A recent study was conducted to determine what percent of LASIK & Refractive Surgeons WHO ACTUALLY PERFORMED THE PROCEDURE, have had Laser Vision Correction. Certainly, eye surgeons who perform refractive surgery MUST know the dark dirty secrets of safety issues and would avoid putting themselves at undue risk. After all…EYE SURGEONS NEED EXCELLENT VISION!

Results of the Laser Vision Correction Safety Study

The study, called Prevalence of Laser Vision Correction in Ophthalmologists Who Perform Refractive Surgery was published in the September Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery and had some interesting results. Responses were received from 248 (99.2%) of 250 ophthalmologists who were queried, of which 232 (92.8%) met the criteria of currently working as refractive surgeons. Of the 232 subjects, 161 (69.4%) reported that they had refractive errors potentially amenable to treatment with laser vision correction, not including presbyopia. Of the 161 ophthalmologists with treatable refractive errors, 54 (33.5%) reported they were not candidates for laser vision correction for a variety of reasons and 107 (66.5%) reported they were candidates for LVC. Of the laser vision correction candidates, 62.6% reported that they had an LVC procedure in their own eyes! Of the overall 232 subjects, more than 90% recommend LVC for adult members of their immediate family!

The message is clear. The data speaks for itself. Two thirds of the eye surgeons who perform LASIK, and are good candidates for LASIK-HAVE LASIK! They are confident of the safety, efficacy and predictability-THAT THEY HAVE IT THEMSELVES!!!! And they recommend it to their family members. The key here to having a great result is finding out if you are a good LASIK candidate. We can help!

I cannot stand my eyes being touched and I couldn’t even wear contacts because the thought of putting them in my eyes scared me!  After having the surgery, I kicked myself because I should have had LASIK a long time ago.  There truly is nothing to it, I didn’t feel a thing!  Dr. Van and her staff are truly great.”
