The quality of vision offered by LASIK is superior to that offered by Ortho-K contact lenses and patients need to consider visual performance as they choose a method of vision correction to help them become less dependent on or even independent of eyeglasses for seeing at distance.
About LASIK & Ortho-K Contact Lenses
LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery that provides a method of vision correction to help people with common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism see clearly at distance without being dependent on glasses or contact lenses. Ortho-K contact lenses or Orthokeratology is a method of contact lens fitting used to temporarily reshape the cornea to allow people to see at distance and be independent of eyeglasses and contacts for periods of time throughout the day.
Recently researchers reporting in Cornea compared the differences in visual performance between Ortho-K contact lenses and LASIK for the treatment of low-to-moderate myopia. The results in this study suggest that LASIK provides better visual quality outcomes than Ortho-K contact lenses for the treatment of low-to-moderate myopia and that for best vision LASIK is the preferred method of vision correction.
